Sweet Potato Wedges

Recently I decided to make some changes to my diet and try new things such as juicing, eating mostly fruits & veggies...all that good stuff. I'm not interested in becoming a vegetarian (I love chicken way too much) but I wouldn't mind losing a little extra around the mid-section. Last week I was determined to detox for a full week. Cold turkey, nothing but fruits, veggies and water. I started out good but unfortunately didn't make it all 7 days (no surprise there). One good thing that came out of that experience was this recipe I found on jointhereboot.com. I'm proud to say that these have become my new favorite. I've made them 3 times in the past week...plus they're on the menu for dinner tonight!

Sweet Potato Wedges

1 Sweet Potato * 2 Tbsp. Olive Oil * 1/2 tsp. Cumin * 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon * 1/4 tsp. Pepper
1/2 tsp. Sea Salt (regular salt works fine too)

*Preheat oven to 425 degrees

*Peel the sweet potato, cut it in half lengthwise and slice each halve into 4-5 wedges

*Put the wedges into a bowl and toss with the oil, cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper

*Place wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper

*Bake for about 30 minutes - the outside will be slightly brown with crispy edges

Bon App├ętit!

BTW: You may have to adjust the ingredients a bit, depending on the amount of people you're feeding.

Huddle House

Me and the honey got up this morning and went to breakfast. YAY, no cooking for me ;-) I'd never been to the Huddle House before, but he explained it to me as the upgraded waffle house.

He was not correct. Sure the inside was a bit of an upgrade, but the food and service...not so much. For starters, we waited for our food for like 45 minutes. Is that legal?? Then once it finally came, things weren't cooked all the way, items were missing and it just wasn't a good look. Plus, I'm pretty sure it was our waitress's first day - hope it gets better for her.

Bottom line: I was not impressed, he was disappointed and they will probably never see us again :-( Where's an IHOP when you need one?

OOTD: Saturday Swag

Happy Saturday!!

Headed to breakfast...

Zyrtec-D...Please

Seriously...who would have thought something as simple as going to the store and picking up a box of Zyrtec-D would be so difficult. For the past two weeks my allergies have been giving me the blues, sneezing like crazy, itchy/watery eyes, headaches, the whole nine. I'm one of those "take an allergy pill everyday" type of people. So the days when I can get away with not taking one are very few and far between.

Bottom line: I'm allergic to dogs + I have a dog = enough said

The day I took my last pill was no different from any other time that's happened where I would just politely take myself to the store and buy another box. Little did I know that things were about to change. For the first few days, I searched high and low for a pharmacy that had it in stock. I'm talking Walgreen's, Kroger, random pharmacy shops, Savannah, TN Walmart, Florence, AL Walmart and then finally the Jackson, TN Walmart...what did I find? Absolutely nothing. After realizing that it was not just a coincidence that every store was out, I figured that something must be going on. That's when I learned the horrible news that I needed a prescription to get my hands on the goods...ugh

Frustrated because I didn't have a regular doctor down here yet (seeing how it had only been a couple weeks since the move), I had to go with plan B. Luckily my honey was able to point me in the right direction and I was able to get an appointment for the new week, which is actually pretty good considering the usual wait time for a new patient appointment. In the meantime, I was stuck with plan B (Allegra-D) and let me just say that it does not work the same! Not at all.

Which brings me to today...yeah I know it took me a minute to get to the point but whatever. My appointment was scheduled for 9:40am, which is probably the earliest I've had to be anywhere in a very long time. I left the house at 9:35am and still made it through the door of the doctor's office on time. That's one perk of a small town, everything is close. I sat in that raggedy office with a lackluster cell phone signal for over 2 hours, yes...2 of them. Good news is, I'm healthy. Bad news, I still have the allergies that I wasted time trying to describe to the doctor because of course she had to find them out for herself. She also thought it would be good to write me a script for a nose spray and a couple other pills that I should try. Thanks but no thanks lady, I only wanted the Zyrtec-D.

I finally left at place and headed straight to Walmart, anxious to get that little green box that has always held the cure for my allergies. Got here and the pharmacist informed me that they were out of stock, but not to worry because they did have this...

For real for real, the generic version? Is this a joke? I went through all of that for the Equate brand! I was not a happy camper. And before you start thinking that I'm above taking the generic brand, I'll be the first to say that I'm not. But when it comes to my allergies, I don't like taking chances...especially when I'm used to getting the regular brand from any given pharmacy back home. Call me crazy, but for some reason seeing that box definitely didn't give me the satisfaction I was going for.

Ugh, I digress. The box is still sitting here, unopened. Not quite sure why I'm waiting but I don't think I can hold out much longer. Wish me luck...

Who Is Gabe Flowers??

I recently completed a couple tag videos on youtube, because they're pretty fun to do. This should give you all the answers to the burning questions in your head about me. Enjoy!

I DID IT!!

Hello world, it's Gabe Flowers!!

You don't even understand how happy I am to be typing this post right now.  For the past nine months I've wanted to start a blog. I knew that this year would be super hectic, leaving me plenty to talk about between planning a wedding, starting a business, moving out of my very first apartment, then actually getting married and relocating to the country (yes, all of that has happened).

Unfortunately, I couldn't get myself together in time for those events to get documented the way I wanted.  Why the hold up you ask?? It's actually pretty simple, I couldn't decide on a name - I know right, how lame?! After many sleepless nights and countless brainstorming sessions of trying to pick the most creative blog title ever, I chose to go with the most original...my own name ;-)

So with that said, welcome to The Gabe Fix at gabeflowers.com

Story of a big city girl trying to find her way in a small country town, all while learning how to be the best wife ever. This should be interesting - stay tuned!

xoxo,
